Description
Here is an extremely special vintage Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona reference 6263 from extremely early in the model’s production with Mark 2 Paul Newman Ghost dial, and case with Mark 1 chronograph pushers. Serial number 2.20MM dates production to 1969.
Original stainless steel case has Mark 1 screw-down chronograph pushers and original screw-down crown. Original bezel with sharp edges and black Units per Hour scale from ‘50’ to ‘200’. Plastic crystal in perfect condition. Case is very clean and mint. Dimensions are 37mm diameter by 13.5mm thick.
Original untouched Mark 2 Paul Newman “Panda” two-color white dial in mint+ condition. The dial has a crisp step onto the contrasting black ring surrounding the dial with the luminous dots (all intact) and white minutes and seconds chapter. Contrasting black subdials are sunken and with concentric guilloche. Original hands also in perfect condition.
This watch is from 1969, which is the very earliest of the 6263’s production. The 6265/6263s were Rolex’s newest, next-generation Daytona models at the time, and were improved over the previous Daytona model 6262 by the screw-down chronograph pushers which improved water resistance. Naturally, Rolex was keen to promote and market the improvement and did so by naming the 6265/6263s “OYSTER” Cosmograph (versus the earlier Cosmograph) witnessing the watch’s increased water resistance.
Original Rolex manual winding Caliber 727 with 17 jewels and column wheel chronograph construction. Movement is clean and running and chronograph functions reset to zero.
Rolex riveted Oyster bracelet in very clean and mint condition.
This watch is guaranteed 100% original and authentic and is an important vintage Rolex and a fascinating example of how the brand iterated and improved its products over time. Condition is mint+.
