Description
When a vintage Rolex dial begins to transform in color, it is called a color change dial. Any hue of brown is called “tropical” and is the favorite collectors’ color. In fact, since each color change dial evolves differently (only a tiny minority of dials undergo a color change), these dials effectively become works of art; each a piece unique and, consequently, a valuable treasure.
Color change dials occur most frequently on Rolex sports watches. A Datejust with a color change is unusual and this early reference 1601 Datejust now has a tantalizing caramel color.
Original stainless steel case is 36mm diameter and features 18k white gold fluted bezel, screw down crown operating perfectly and plastic crystal. For a 52 year old watch, this case is still mint with thick uniform lugs and crisp bezel. Serial number 824XXX dates production to 1962, which is confirmed by the III.62 date code on the inside case back.
Original untouched pie-pan dial, now caramel colored, with applied hour markers, early style alpha hands and date at 3 o’clock.
Original Rolex automatic winding Caliber 1560 with 26 jewels and adjusted to temperature and in five positions. Movement is pristine and running.
Strap is custom distressed rustic leather strap with steel Rolex buckle.
