Description
Remember Mr. T from the 1970s television show The A Team? He used to say “I pity the fool”. Well, I pity any watch lover who hasn’t laid eyes on the Patek Philippe reference 5070 chronograph in platinum. It has a dark blue dial, which contrasts beautifully with the platinum case. I have found myself a new favorite chronograph!
The 5070 is an important Patek Philippe because it was the first modern production wristwatch from Patek that was oversized. It signaled Patek’s future (at the time) stylistic direction, which is now clear: modern sized cases with super attractive dials and complications. The 5070 is now discontinued in all metals. The platinum is the rarest and this is one of the last sealed new ones.
Platinum case measures 42mm diameter by 13mm thick. The bezel is very broad and is set off by the winding crown and the rectangular chrono-pushers and long, thick lugs. The lugs are stepped. What a masculine, handsome watch case.
Dial is dark blue with applied arabic numerals and leaf style hands. The subdials are sunken and have concentric guilloche. There is a minutes and fifths of a seconds chapter and tachymetric scale, both printed in white at the periphery of the dial.
Movement is the manual winding Patek Philippe Caliber 27, clearly visible through the sapphire display back, proudly displaying its Geneva Seal. The Caliber 27 has 24 jewels, beats at a leisurely 18,000 BPH which helps to extend the power reserve to approximately 56 hours, and is adjusted to temperature and in 5 positions. This movement is particularly nice to look at, as it has several levels of bridges, plates, jewels and springs. The chronograph has column wheel construction.
Strap is dark blue Patek hand sewn crocodile with platinum Patek deployant clasp.
Watch is factory sealed new with box and papers.
