Lange & Sohne continues to produce absolutely masterful watches, both from aesthetic as well as engineering/watchmaking perspectives. This ‘31’ provides a 31 day power reserve while maintaining a constant amplitude of 270 degrees on the balance wheel throughout the watch’s drawdown in power.
The technical innovations in this movement are well documented and amazing. The 46mm case is not a style statement: it is this large to make room for the two massive mainsprings and the mechanism for managing the torque. Basically, the force stored in the dual mainsprings is so powerful, that if left unmanaged, would destroy the balance wheel. So, to apply philosophy to it, this Caliber L034.1 balances the Yin and Yang of the movement’s incredible power to achieve a harmonious result.
Ingeniously, which is to be expected from Lange & Sohne, the watch is delivered with a winding tool, which fits into the case back, which allows the mainsprings to be wound with, you guessed it, 31 turns. Otherwise, winding this watch would take a very long time indeed. The winding tool itself is deceivingly complicated, and inside it is a complicated ratchet and release system.
The 46mm 18k rose gold case is classic Lange. That means case lines without any superfluous touches and the best fit and finish in the watch business. Sapphire crystals front and back.
Dial is silvered with applied rose gold indexes, large power reserve indicator, Alpha style rose gold hands, subsidiary seconds dial and oversized date display. “MONATS-WERK” is a reference to the fact that the movement’s power reserve is one month.
Lange Caliber L034.1 has a total of 62 jewels, 406 individual parts, beats at 21,600 beats per hour and has Lange’s sublime level of decoration and finishing.
