The Rolex reference 6238 chronograph or so called “Pre Daytona”, has a simplicity that became absent to the more sporty appearance of the Daytona models. The black dial is significant and extremely sought after. The silver dial 6238’s are substantially more common. This watch is a must have for any serious vintage collector.
Stainless steel case measures 36mm in diameter by 13.5mm thick. Features a smooth bezel unlike the later Daytona bezel which, has the engraved units per Hour scale. Crystal is plastic. The watch has a screw-down crown and sports round pump style chronograph pushers.
The rare and highly collectable all original black dial is with non-contrasting color subdials which, differentiates itself from the Daytona with its contrasting color subdials. Applied silver hour markers and luminous dots along the minute track. Dial is in marvelous condition.
Movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 72B with 17 jewels and column wheel construction. Serial number 1077XXX dates production of the watch to 1964.
This watch is on a vintage Rolex riveted Oyster bracelet and comes with original Rolex box.
