What a rarity of a vintage Submariner this watch is. Rolex initially produced these 1959 5512s with square crown guards, but they received feedback from divers that the square shaped crown guards prevented the divers from manipulating the crowns with their gloves on. Ever the pragmatists, Rolex shaved down the square crown guards, arriving at this variant of pointed crown guards, which are known as the “Eagle Beak”. It is believed that this modification was made to 17 5512 watch cases all with 1959 production dates.
Original stainless steel case is in excellent condition and measures 40mm in diameter and is approx 14mm thick. The big story with this case is the Eagle Beak crown guards. Faded bezel insert shows some aging. Original screw down crown working perfectly. Domed plastic crystal.
Original untouched and gorgeous tropical brown gilt dial with chapter ring and uniform patina across the luminous including the original hands.
Movement for this watch is the original automatic winding Caliber 1530 with 25 jewels.
Vintage Submariner watches do not get any nicer or more collectable than this wristwatch.
